Why lease a BMW M2?

Offering a substantial upgrade on the already-impressive 2 Series, the BMW M2 brings gritty performance, a striking design and a competitive price point. Unlike other sporty models, the M2 doesn’t prioritise performance to the detriment of practicality - the plush interior and generous boot space can easily accommodate a small family, while the rear-wheel-drive setup and powerful turbocharged engines ensure an energetic ride. Safety is also paramount - just as you’d expect, considering the similar BMW 2 Series achieved the full five-star Euro NCAP rating. And although there are only two trim levels - the standard M2 or the M2 Competition - there are plenty of optional extras to add personalisation.

AMT's review

Performance and features

The previous M2 was considered a winner by many drivers, and now the new iteration is even better thanks to a new and improved twin-turbo six-cylinder engine. This places it well above others in its class, as most other small sports cars are equipped with four cylinders. What’s more, the M2 can be fitted with either a DCT semi-auto seven-speed transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox, allowing drivers to take full control of the rear-wheel drive, front-engine and non-adaptive dampers. With the small saloon having been on sale since 2014, the new gaping air intakes and sizable tyres are a more-than-significant upgrade.

A dual-clutch transmission-equipped M2 can hit 62mph in an admirable 4.2 seconds, beating the manual variant by 0.2 seconds, while the 3.0-litre straight-six engine produces 370bhp. The performance-focused Competition has two turbos, allowing it to him 7,600rpm and offering a total of 404bhp. Impressively, the M2 achieves a firm ride without switchable dampers - in no small part thanks to the bespoke Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres and complimentary drivetrain. In fact, the M2 has a 58mm wider front track and 3mm longer wheelbase than the equally punchy M235i to enhance this control.

Interior technology

The M2’s interior is where its practicality shines through - comfort is assured thanks to a wide range of adjustment in the steering wheel and seat, with the option to pay extra for electric seats. Leather, Alcantara and soft-touch plastics are dotted around the cabin, working to frame BMW’s sensational iDrive system. Consisting of a high-resolution 8.8-inch screen that can be controlled via touch or via rotary dials, iDrive brings real-time traffic information, DAB radio and sat-nav, although Apple CarPlay is extra. You don’t need to spring for the Competition model unless bhp is your goal, as even the entry-level M2 is reasonably well equipped, with 19-inch black alloys, dual-zone climate control and interior LED lighting. All in all, the BMW M2 is a solid choice.

Alternative deals

At AMT, we offer a range of BMW cars to lease as well as the M2. If you like the BMW M2, you may also like our deals on the Audi A5 or Mercedes-Benz C Class.
