A long-term strategy for immediate savings

AMT’s initial brief from Donnelly & Co saw us provide superior quality and cheaper to run vehicles for approximately 20% less than their existing agreement. Now, thanks to sound advice and a proactive attitude to customer service, the relationship is blossoming.

Donnelly & Co is a long-established plumbing, heating, electrical, joinery and building services business based in the East Kilbride area of Glasgow. The company operates 29 vans and three directors’ company cars. Vehicles have historically been acquired via a mix of outright purchase and lease agreements.

The vans are a business-critical part of Donnelly & Co’s business, and the procurement and management of them falls under the remit of general manager David Logan. And in common with many of his SME peers, David wears many hats – though it’s his fleet management responsibilities that absorb a significant proportion of his time.

Van replacement

With four vans due for renewal, David had started the process of negotiating the best deal available when he was introduced via a friend of a friend to Gavin Kirkwood, one of AMT’s area fleet consultants. Keen to ensure he’d exhausted all options, he invited Gavin in for a conversation.

Won over by Gavin’s forensic-like interrogation of the Donnelly business, vehicle requirement and assessment of their current provision, permission was granted to go ahead and quote for the first tranche of replacement vans. AMT was able to not only better the incumbent supplier’s best quote, but also better the specification of van by migrating to the Euro 6 equipped Peugeot Partner Professional, all within the client’s replacement deadline.

And by giving a choice of acquisition options, David was able to choose the route that best met his budget and operational requirements.

The client’s feedback? Overwhelmingly positive:

Proactive consultancy

Of course, AMT’s work has not stopped with the delivery of this first round of vehicles. Gavin has continued towork with David to identify further opportunities to reduce his fleet costs, problem solve, and develop a proactive vehicle replacement strategy that takes into account acquisition cost, operating costs, operational requirements and driver comfort.

For the company cars, he’s also been able to advise on benefit in kind implications to ensure the replacement vehicles are as cost effective as possible, without restricting the driver’s choice.
